Happy Wednesday!

As you know “Cali” the cat retired with Rhoda the end of April.  With the help of my granddaughter I have acquired a New Cat who is in need of a name.  Since this cat while stay with me at the office and possibly do some travelling I would like to have you help me with a name.  Thank You in advance for your help.

This week I have been focusing on things that would make our churches my family friendly.  I find that ideas are easy to find, but actually doing them consistently is a bit of a challenge for most churches.

The following analogy is something to think about.

Making Your Church Family Friendly:

Wildebeest, also known as gnu or African antelope, mate and give birth to their young during their annual migration to the Serengeti plains in Tanzania, East Africa. Hyenas also roam the Serengeti, stalking the wildebeest calves. Aware of these predators, a mother wildebeest immediately upon giving birth begins nudging the weak newborn to its feet. It is not uncommon to see hyenas stalk the helpless young within minutes of birth. In an effort to protect her calf, the mother will counterattack. But the hyenas, working as a pack, often keep the mother distracted until a lone predator can get the calf.

Observers tell us that thousands of wildebeest graze nearby, raising their heads to watch this drama as it unfolds. If they acted together, they could easily outnumber the hyenas. But not one wildebeest makes a move to help mother or calf.

The wildebeest herd typifies a dysfunctional church(quite the opposite of a family-friendly church that makes ministry family-centered and church-supported). Family-friendly churches recognize that parents have the primary responsibility for the spiritual nurture of the child. But at the same time the church stands ready to assist and support the ministry of the home.

Three ways family-friendly churches offer support are by:

  1. Making church child-friendly.
  2. Making church a safe place for children to accept Jesus.
  3. Supporting and training parents for discipleship of the child.

I pray that we would search for ways to implement this in our churches.

I received an email from Diane Brown from Nathaniel’s Hope.  She sent the following information regarding special needs children. Check it out.  It is a great resource.

“We are a resource for churches that would like to start special needs ministry. Nathaniel’s Hope offers training and equips ministries to help families through a once a month program called Buddy Break.

I have sent you a link to our website and sent you a link where the Daily Herald in Chicago IL did a story about Buddy Break. It’s a great video.”

I trust you will have a great week. I pray for you and your ministry daily.

Summer Children, Family and Singles Ministries programming for
churches is in full swing.  VBS, Summer Camp, Oshkosh for Pathfinders and family
vacations are all happening now.  For information on upcoming events make sure
you check out the Florida Conference IYM website and Camp Kulaqua websites.
There are still openings for Summer Camp (next week… openings for Junior age
Girls) and Family Camp (Labor Day weekend) at Camp Kulaqua.
A Spanish 6 @ Camp Kulaqua.  Check out the video below and on our web page you will find the flyer etc.

Awesome opportunities are available to you.
Father’s Day is this coming weekend.  I hope you have plan something special to honor the father’s.
Here is a simple idea for a special card.  s Day. Using their thumbprints, the children created pictures of sheep.

The children can draw a shepherd and glue this poem to their picture:

Children are just little lambs
Needing love and care.
We have a Heavenly Shepherd
Who is with us everywhere.
But even on this Earth,
God gave us shepherds, too.
He knew just what I needed.
I’m so glad He gave me you!

Inside their cards, children can glue the preprinted words to Psalm 78:5-7 (New Century Version):
“The Lord made an agreement with Jacob and gave the teachings to Israel, which
he commanded our ancestors to teach to their children. Then their children would
know them, even their children not yet born. And they would tell their children.
So they would all trust God and would not forget what he had done but would obey ”
For those children in your congregation who don’t have dads
living with them, you can encourage them to give their cards to people who have
been like shepherds or fathers to them.

Have an awesome week.  I really enjoy the feed back you give on the ideas that are shared.

Thanks for taking the time to reply and share.
As is my practice I continue to Pray for your and the children you minister to.

Greetings:
It has been an awesome week so far.  We started
with the Open House at the New Florida Conference Office and ABC on Sunday.  If you were there you were blessed.  Check out the pictures etc on the Florida
Conference website.
Now we are in full camp mode at Camp Kulaqua.  Each day brings new learning and opportunity for the campers to find “Jesus” in and around the camp.  Check out the website for limited availability if you are interested in send a child to camp this summer.
This week as I was doing research for my camp program I came across this prayer walk.  I thought I would share the idea with you.  Its a great way to involve children in a prayer

Kids Prayer Walk: Take a walk around your church grounds or neighborhood with thekids.

Stop every 50 steps and invite the children to look around for:

•    something to praise God for creating;

•     someone who has a need, and;

•     something that reminds them of a blessing God has given them.

Allow 30 seconds for children to look around and 30 seconds to pray silently before resuming your walk.

When you return to your meeting area, discuss the most surprising thing that each child found to pray about as they walked during the kids prayer walk

Still praying for you and your ministry.
